Korean highway duties for new Dynapac soil compactor

As highway construction continues to form a key part of South Korea’s infrastructure policy, new Dynapac CA252 vibratory soil compactor is delivered for compaction duties during construction of the interconnecting highway between Dong Tan City and Suwom City.

A new Dynapac CA252 single drum soil compactor has been delivered for soil compaction duties on a 25 km long highway south of Seoul. The new highway will connect Dong Tan City and Suwom City providing a link to the main No 1 highway from Seoul through Busan.

Awarded by the Korea National Highway Corporation, the highway is scheduled for completion by the end of 2008 in a 36 month contract.

Earthworks for the new highway, which includes two 350 m long tunnels and five bridges, was awarded to sub-contractor Cheung To with Dynapac owner / operator M.S. Kim responsible for compacting the infill embankments between bridges 1 and 2 over a distance of 600 m, close to Dong Tan City.

The new Dynapac CA252 was purpose-ordered by M.S.Kim for the project and delivered to site in October this year.

The infill material, comprising soil with less than 20 mm rock content has been compacted over a 40 m width at the base reducing to 30 m some 20 m high to the bridge level; and scheduled for completion by August 2008. Illustrated at Bridge No 2, the Dynapac CA252 compacts each 30 cm layer in 6-7 vibrating passes to a thickness of 20 cm to meet the specified density; pressure tested daily.

The CA252 provides an operating weight, including ROPS of 10,440 kg and a drum width of 2.13 m.  Powered by a Cummins turbo diesel engine rated at 93 kW (125 hp), the roller ensures a compaction static linear load of 28.4 kg / cm and offers a nominal amplitude of 1.7 / 0.8 mm and a vibration frequency at high / low amplitude of 33/33 Hz.

Owner / Operator

The concept of owner / operator operation is very common in South Korea with groups of owners forming small cooperatives for tax reasons but operating as an individual sub-contractor. According to Sales Director,  S. K. Kim of U-Young, the local Dynapac dealership, he has around 300 Dynapac operator / owner customers.

Mr M.S. Kim is particularly encouraging for U-Young however, as he had previously owned a US-manufactured soil compactor for more than 10 years.

He made the change following recognition of Dynapac’s strong branding in the Korean market. Having only taken delivery of the CA252 in October Mr Kim already recognises the “strength of the new roller – everything seems so much stronger,” he said.

“Spare parts on my previous roller were becoming too expensive and there was always differential problems.”

“The cab is also vibration-free – which was not the case with my old roller – making it a very comfortable ride,” he continued.

Fuel economy is also a factor.  Whilst not a problem for Mr Kim with the main contractor responsible for fuel costs, the new CA252 boasts a fuel consumption of 9 litre / hour which over a 10 hour day totals 90 litres; providing a minimum saving of 10 litres a day compared with Mr Kim’s previous US-roller.

Whilst perhaps not initially a significant saving, when costed over a six-day week at 1400 W ($1.5) a litre and still rising, it represents a saving of 84,000 W ($90.6) for the contractor.

Already Mr Kim has recommended Dynapac to a similar US competitive-roller owner / operator who takes delivery of his new Dynapac CA252 in December.
