Qatar contractor order Dynapac for Doha residental roadbuilding project

 14 November 2011

Qatar contractor Al Darwish has extended its fleet of Dynapac compactors in order to upgrade the road system at Doha's prestigious Al Waab district.

Qatar's Al Darwish Engineering WWL has invested in three new Dynapac compaction units to complete a contract for the laying and upgrading of roads in the Al Waab district of Doha, an area that is seeing extensive building of luxurious new residence.

The contractor is carrying out the work for Ashgal, Qatar's public works authority, under a US$37 million contract that was awarded in March 2010 and which is scheduled for completion in the first half of 2012.

The latest order comprises a Dynapac CC624HF double-drum vibratory compaction roller and two pneumatic-tyred rollers; all delivered at the beginning of the year by Dynapac's local distributor, Oriental Trading Co, a division of the Petroserv Group.

The compaction machines join Al Darwish Engineering's existing fleet of Dynapac rollers and compactors.

“Our entire road-surfacing fleet is Dynapac” says R S Boyle, Plant Manager for Al Darwish Engineering. “Using just one manufacturer helps us with planning and meeting the specifications, we have consistency in our maintenance operation, and we know that reliability in equipment and backup is part of the Dynapac brand.”

“At Al Waab, which is a very upmarket residential area that is growing quickly, our work has to be of the highest standard, because we are putting in infrastructure that has to serve long-term what will become an even more busy area than it now is.”

The work is being carried out in three packages and includes new and upgraded roads, junctions, peripheral roads, service roads and footpaths.

“We are compacting and rolling the road surface to a specification of 98%, ” says Mr Boyle. "The CC624 compacts the surface quickly, with a maximum of six passes, and the pneumatic-tyred roller completes the surface with, again, a maximum of six passes."

“We are finding that working within the confines of small roads with tight turnings is not a problem, as the manoeuvrability of the rollers is backed up by our small Dynapac double-drum units that are designed for working close to the curb and in other restricted spots."

“As we are working in small areas at a time, rather than on extensive stretches of road, Dynapac gives us enormous flexibility", he adds.

Al Waab is a district in the south of Qatar that has witnessed tremendous growth, beginning in the mid-1990s, and resulting in the construction of numerous residential compounds to house locals and expatriates in villas, along with commercial and medical developments.

Key locations in the district include Doha Sports City, home to many of the venues of the 2006 Asian Games, Qatar's largest structure, Aspire Tower, and Qatar's largest stadium, Khalifa Stadium, as well as the country's largest and famous mall, Villagio Mall, themed after the Italian city of Venice. The district also contains a number of schools, including Doha College and the American School of Doha.

Al Waab City, a real estate development currently being constructed in the district, is set to add more than 600 villas, 1,300 apartments and 425 hotel rooms to the district. Furthermore, a number of roadside retail centres have been constructed parallel to Salwa Road, the highway linking Doha to the south of the country and Saudi Arabia.
