Four Dynapac rollers help upgrade Istanbul's Atatürk airport
|
Four Dynapac smooth-drum vibratory rollers are being used by Turkish contractor Eko Insaat to upgrade – repair and lengthen - the runway and taxiways at Istanbul’s Atatürk International Airport. The units comprise three CC422 single-drum compactors and one CC524HF double-drum compactor. The machines earlier in the summer completed the first phase of the work, the runway and aprons, and are now waiting at a compound on the airport site to begin the second phase, comprising the taxiways, later this year. Sabiha Gökçen, named after the first female combat pilot in the world, who was Turkish, was built because Atatürk was not large enough to meet the growing international and domestic passenger demands. A new terminal designed to increase capacity from 3.5 million per year to 25 million was inaugurated during the latter half of last year, with runway and taxiways to be upgraded by the end of this year. Eko Insaat is part of the Eko Group, founded in the mid 1960s and today one of Turkey's leading construction and civil engineering companies. The Dynapac machines, which are part of Eko's huge plant fleet, were supplied by Dynapac's distributor for Turkey, Teknomak Makina Inc. The runways, taxiways and aprons have an 8 cm thick base course, with two binder layers on top, each of 6 cm thickness, and a wearing course of 4cm. Eight passes are being taken by the rollers to ensure 100% compaction of the wearing course. The arrivals figure for the airport is predicted to reach 11 million by the end of 2010. Istanbul has two lnternational airports, the larger being Atatürk International Airport, located on the European side of the city. The smaller Sabiha Gökçen International Airport is located on the Asian side.
